Is Google Search Console Dead?

Impressions, clicks and CTR are falling across every brand while AI answers eat the traffic. What Search Console still tells you, and what to measure next.

Open Google Search Console for almost any brand right now and you'll see the same three lines drooping in unison: impressions down, clicks down, CTR down. Not a seasonal dip. Not an algorithm punishment. A structural slide that's showing up across every industry we look at, every month, for the last 18 months.

Meanwhile the actual buyers haven't disappeared. They've just moved. They're inside Google's AI Overview, inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini - getting the answer (and the brand recommendation) before a blue link ever loads. So the obvious question: is Google Search Console dead?

What GSC is actually showing you in 2026

Google Search Console measures one thing very well: how your site performs in the classic Google blue-link SERP. That's it. It does not see:

  • When AI Overview cites your page but the user never clicks through.
  • When ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity recommend your brand inside an answer.
  • When Gemini summarizes your comparison page and the buyer screenshots it into Slack.
  • When a buying committee researches you across three AI engines before ever typing your name into Google.

So the drop in impressions and clicks isn't (only) a ranking story. It's a measurement gap. Your audience didn't shrink. The instrument got smaller than the stage.

The zero-click reality

AI Overview now sits on top of a huge chunk of informational queries. The buyer reads the AI summary, gets the answer, and never clicks. That's a "win" for the user, a "win" for Google - and a clean -30% to -60% in your GSC chart, depending on category.

Stack on top of that the volume of buyer-intent queries that never reach google.com at all anymore - they happen inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini - and the math gets bleaker for the traditional dashboard.

Do impressions, clicks and CTR still matter?

Yes - but as a shrinking subset of your visibility, not the whole picture. The honest read:

  • Impressions now measure only the slice of demand that still types into Google and sees a blue-link result. They no longer represent total demand for your category.
  • Clicks tell you how many people bypassed AI Overview to click a blue link. A useful number, but a smaller and smaller one.
  • CTR in this new environment is structurally lower. Comparing it to your 2022 CTR is comparing two different products.

So no, Google Search Console isn't dead. It's just been demoted - from "your single source of truth for organic visibility" to "one channel report among many."

Google is already adding AI Overview insights to GSC

In a significant shift announced in June 2026, Google began rolling out generative AI performance reports inside Search Console - explicitly designed to surface how often your brand appears inside AI Overviews, not just blue links. This is the first official signal from Google that the old "10 blue links" dashboard is no longer enough. The new report shows impressions and clicks from AI-generated results, helping you understand where your content is being cited in Google's own AI summaries. You can read the official announcement here: Gen AI performance reports in Search Console.

But here's the strategic layer most teams miss: even with these new GSC AI insights, you're still only measuring Google's AI surfaces. It won't show you ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini. And it won't show you the full picture of your organic health - because AI Overview could be both cannibalizing blue-link clicks and sending new referral traffic you're not tracking as "organic."

That's why we strongly recommend pairing the new GSC AI report with Google Analytics 4 total traffic analysis. Specifically:

  • Look at your total sessions and total users month-over-month - not just organic, not just Google. If AI Overview is actually growing awareness, your overall traffic trend should tell the story.
  • Track unique organic users as a baseline - it captures new discovery better than returning sessions and lets you see if your reach is expanding even as blue-link CTR shrinks.
  • Watch the ratio of organic users to total users. A declining ratio with flat total traffic means Google is becoming a smaller share of a stable pie. A rising ratio means you're winning back share from other channels.

The new GSC AI reports are a welcome upgrade. But the real insight comes from triangulating three signals: GSC AI Overview data + GA4 total traffic trends + AI Visibility across every engine.

What's next: AI Visibility as the new top-line metric

If the buyer journey now starts inside an AI engine, your top-line metric has to live there too. That's the gap Focala was built to close. Instead of staring at a single graph going down, you get one weekly number going up: an AI Visibility Score that measures whether your brand is being cited inside the answers across:

  • Google AI Overview - are you cited inside the summary, or just under it?
  • ChatGPT - does it recommend your brand for the prompts your ICP actually types?
  • Perplexity - which sources are pulled, and is yours one of them?
  • Claude - what does it say when a buyer asks "what's the best tool for X?"
  • Gemini, Grok, Copilot - same question, every engine, every week.

Then we layer the traditional GSC metrics back in as one tab - not the whole story. Impressions, clicks and CTR become a useful diagnostic for the blue-link channel, sitting next to AI citations, prompt coverage, AI-referred sessions, and AI-influenced pipeline.

Takeaways

  • Google Search Console isn't dead - it's measuring a shrinking channel.
  • Falling impressions, clicks and CTR are partly a ranking story and largely a measurement gap created by AI Overview and LLM answers.
  • Google has started adding AI Overview performance reports to GSC - a signal that even Google knows the old dashboard is incomplete. Read the announcement.
  • To see the real trend, monitor GA4 total traffic and unique organic users alongside GSC - AI Overview may be shifting traffic, not destroying it.
  • The new top-line metric is AI Visibility: are you cited inside the answer across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and AI Overview?
  • The teams winning in 2026 still watch GSC - but they make decisions off a weekly AI Visibility Score.
